Thailand wants high-skilled foreign talent, and in 2018 it created the SMART Visa program to attract it. For tech workers, investors, researchers and startup founders who qualify, SMART Visa offers 4 years of stay, no work permit requirement, and reduced bureaucracy. The catch: the qualification bar is high and the process is BOI-heavy.

If you're a software engineer earning ฿200,000/month working for a BOI company, or an investor putting serious capital into Thai businesses, SMART Visa is worth understanding. For most digital nomads in Phuket coffee shops, the DTV or LTR is more practical. Here's the full picture.

What Is the Thailand SMART Visa?

The SMART Visa (Smart Non-Immigrant Visa) is a program managed by Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) that grants long-stay permission to foreign nationals in four categories: Talent (T), Investor (I), Executive (E), and Startup (S).

Key benefits for all categories:

  • 4-year stay (renewable), vs 1 year for Non-B or Non-OA
  • No work permit required for the visa holder (major benefit)
  • 90-day reporting extended to annual — report to immigration once per year, not every 90 days
  • Multiple re-entries without separate re-entry permits
  • Spouse and children receive dependent SMART 'O' visas for the same duration
  • Fast-track service at Immigration checkpoints

The 12 Targeted Industries

SMART Visa T and E categories require employment in one of Thailand's government-designated "Future Industries" (อุตสาหกรรมเป้าหมาย). These are:

Income and Qualification Requirements in Detail

SMART T — Talent: Income Threshold

The minimum salary requirement for SMART T is ฿200,000/month (approximately USD 5,500 or €5,000 at current rates). This must be verifiable through employment contracts, payslips, or income statements. In 2026, ฿200,000/month is a very high income for Phuket standards — most tech workers in the local market earn ฿60,000–฿150,000. However, expats employed by multinational companies or foreign companies and living in Phuket as a personal choice can earn this.

Exception: if your employer is a Thai government agency, public university, or public research institution, the threshold drops to ฿100,000/month.

Required Documentation (SMART T)

  • Employment contract specifying salary, role and industry
  • Letter from employer confirming BOI registration or targeted industry status
  • Evidence of employer's BOI certificate or industry registration
  • Health insurance with minimum ฿40,000 outpatient and ฿2,000,000 inpatient coverage
  • Proof of qualifications (degree, professional certifications)
  • Passport (minimum 6 months validity, preferably 2+ years)
Health insurance is mandatory for SMART Visa All SMART Visa categories require health insurance covering a minimum of ฿40,000 for outpatient and ฿2,000,000 for inpatient. Major providers in Phuket such as Cigna Global, Pacific Cross and Allianz all offer plans that meet this requirement. Your employer may provide this — confirm before applying.

How to Apply for a SMART Visa from Phuket

  1. Pre-screening: Register at the SMART Visa portal (smartvisa.boi.go.th) and submit pre-screening documents. The BOI reviews whether you qualify — this is free and typically takes 10–15 business days
  2. Receive endorsement letter: If pre-approved, the BOI issues an endorsement letter confirming your eligibility
  3. Apply for visa: Take the endorsement letter to a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country (or a neighbouring country) and apply for the Non-Immigrant SMART visa
  4. Enter Thailand and report address (TM30) within 24 hours if not in a hotel
  5. Annual reporting: Unlike standard 90-day reporting, SMART Visa holders report annually to immigration (Chalong immigration office for most Phuket residents)
  6. Renewal: 4 years later, reapply through the same process — your circumstances must still meet requirements

The LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident), introduced in 2022, actually overlaps significantly with SMART Visa's goals and is often more accessible for high-earning professionals. The "Highly Skilled Professional" LTR category requires ฿150,000/month in a targeted industry — lower bar than SMART T's ฿200,000. And the LTR runs for 10 years vs SMART's 4. For most senior tech workers, LTR is now the better option. See our LTR Visa guide for Phuket expats.

The Honest Assessment: Is SMART Visa Worth It for Phuket?

The SMART Visa made more sense before the LTR Visa launched in 2022. Now, for most tech professionals who earn enough to qualify for SMART T, the LTR Highly Skilled Professional category offers longer stay (10 years vs 4), similar benefits, and doesn't require BOI employer involvement — which is a significant simplification.

SMART Visa still has specific advantages: if your employer is BOI-registered and you want to work directly for a Thai entity (not remote employment for a foreign company), the work permit exemption is particularly valuable. And the SMART S startup category remains the primary structured pathway for startup founders coming to Thailand.

What industries qualify for the SMART T visa?
12 targeted industries: Next-Gen Automotive, Smart Electronics, Medical/Wellness Tourism, Agriculture/Biotech, Food for the Future, Automation/Robotics, Aviation/Logistics, Biofuels/Biochemicals, Digital, Medical Hub, Defence, and Education. Digital and Medical Hub are most relevant to Phuket-based tech workers. Minimum salary ฿200,000/month.
Can I get a SMART visa if I work for a Phuket company?
Yes, if your employer is BOI-registered or in a targeted industry. Most local Phuket companies are not BOI-registered. Remote workers for foreign companies may qualify under Talent category if they earn ฿200,000+/month in a qualifying field.
How does SMART Visa compare to LTR and DTV?
SMART: 4 years, BOI-focused, ฿200k+/month, no work permit. LTR: 10 years, ฿150k+/month for skilled professionals, no work permit for some categories, no BOI requirement. DTV: 5yr validity/180 days, ฿500k income/savings, remote work only (no Thai employment). Most senior tech workers will find LTR more accessible and longer-lasting than SMART now.
Do SMART Visa holders need a work permit in Thailand?
No — SMART Visa holders are exempt from the work permit requirement. This applies to the visa holder, not automatically to their spouse. This is particularly valuable for executives working directly for Thai BOI companies who would otherwise face significant work permit bureaucracy.
