Getting home internet set up in Phuket is one of those tasks that sounds simple and occasionally isn't. The island has three main home broadband providers — AIS Fibre, True Online, and 3BB — plus NT (National Telecom) in some areas, and the satellite option Starlink for truly rural locations. Which one you can actually get depends heavily on your specific address.

I've used three different providers across my six years here, switched twice, and have opinions. This guide cuts through the marketing to give you a realistic picture of what to expect in different parts of Phuket.

The Main Internet Providers in Phuket

AIS Fibre (AIS)

AIS Fibre is consistently rated the best home broadband provider across Thailand by third-party speed tests (Speedtest.net, Ookla). In Phuket, it has strong coverage across most residential areas including Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong, Kata, Karon, Bang Tao, Laguna, Kamala, Surin, Phuket Town, and Patong. Customer service is handled through AIS retail shops and their 1175 hotline. The infrastructure is well-maintained and outage rates are lower than True Online in most Phuket areas. Price: ฿599–1,299/month depending on speed tier (100–1,000 Mbps).

True Online (True Corporation)

True Online is the second major player and competitive in many Phuket areas — particularly around Patong, Kata, and the condominium-dense north of the island. Coverage in Bang Tao and Laguna is solid. Some residents report higher variability in speeds during peak hours compared to AIS. True's bundles with TrueMove H mobile SIM can be good value if you use both services. Price: ฿549–1,199/month (100–1,000 Mbps). True Shop locations in Central Festival and major malls.

3BB (Triple T Broadband)

3BB has the widest coverage in rural and semi-rural Thailand, making it the go-to option for areas where AIS and True haven't reached. In Phuket's more remote residential areas — some parts of Nai Harn, Chalong back roads, rural Cherng Talay — 3BB may be your only fibre option. Speeds are generally adequate for most expat needs (100–200 Mbps plans work well for remote work). Pricing is often competitive: ฿499–999/month. Service quality and customer service has improved significantly in recent years.

NT (National Telecom)

NT is the state telecom, formerly the TOT/CAT network. It has coverage in Phuket but has been losing ground to the private providers. Worth checking if your address shows no AIS, True, or 3BB coverage — particularly in older municipal areas of Phuket Town. Speeds and service quality are variable. Not typically the first choice for expats needing reliable remote work internet.

Starlink (SpaceX Satellite)

Starlink became available in Thailand in 2023 and is now operational across Phuket. It's expensive (hardware kit ฿13,500 upfront + ฿1,900/month service fee) but provides reliable 50–250 Mbps service even in areas with no fibre coverage. Ideal for remote villas where no terrestrial provider reaches, or as a backup connection for home offices. Latency is higher than fibre (~25–60ms vs 5–15ms), which matters for gaming but not video calls.

Coverage by Phuket Area

The most important question isn't "which provider is best overall?" — it's "which provider can I actually get at my address?" Here's a general guide:

Rawai and Nai Harn

AIS Fibre has good coverage through most of Rawai and Nai Harn's residential streets. True Online is available in many parts. 3BB fills gaps in more rural streets. The Rawai-Nai Harn expat Facebook group is an excellent resource for current availability at specific sois — search "AIS" or "True" for recent recommendations.

Chalong

Good fibre coverage via both AIS and True, with 3BB in outlying areas. Chalong has been heavily developed and most residential estates have fibre. The main circle area and nearby streets have all three providers available.

Bang Tao, Laguna, and Cherng Talay

Strong coverage from AIS Fibre and True Online throughout the villa and condo zones. Laguna's internal network supplements broadband for within-complex connectivity. More rural sois west of the main road may have limited options — 3BB or Starlink may be needed.

Phuket Town

All major providers available. NT (National Telecom) has legacy infrastructure here. AIS and True Fibre have been expanding rapidly. 5G mobile broadband is also a viable alternative in Phuket Town given the strong signal density.

Kamala and Surin

Good fibre coverage in the main residential areas. Some hillside villas may require 3BB or Starlink. The Kamala and Surin Facebook expat groups are useful for current local recommendations.

Kata and Karon

Well-served — both AIS and True have strong presence. High-density condo areas have excellent infrastructure. Hillside properties above the main beach road may have more variable availability.

How to Sign Up

The easiest route is to visit the relevant provider's shop:

  • AIS: AIS shops in Central Festival Phuket (Phase 1), Lotus's, and standalone AIS shops throughout the island. Call 1175 or check coverage at ais.th/fibre
  • True Online: True shops in Central Festival, Index Living Mall, and True Move H locations. Coverage check at trueinternet.co.th
  • 3BB: 3BB service offices in Phuket Town and major commercial areas. Coverage check at 3bb.co.th
  • Starlink: Order online at starlink.com — delivery to Phuket takes 3–7 days

You'll need a copy of your passport, your lease agreement (to confirm your address), and a Thai phone number. The provider handles installation, which typically takes 3–7 working days from contract signing. Installation involves routing the fibre cable to your unit — inform your landlord in advance, particularly for condos where cables run through common areas.

Pro tip: Before committing to a 12–24 month contract, check the expat Facebook groups for your specific area. Post "Does anyone use [provider] on Soi X?" — you'll get honest feedback within hours. Coverage maps show availability at the street level but not actual in-building performance.

Mobile Internet as a Backup or Alternative

Thailand's 4G LTE network is excellent in Phuket, and 5G is expanding. If your address has weak fibre options, a 4G/5G router with an AIS, DTAC (now merged with True), or NT SIM card can provide solid home internet. Speeds of 50–150 Mbps are achievable in good coverage areas. Monthly data costs ฿299–699 for unlimited (with fair use policy limits). This is particularly useful as a backup connection for remote workers — our guide to internet speed for remote work in Phuket covers the full options.

What Speed Do You Actually Need?

For most remote workers and expat households: a 100 Mbps plan is the sweet spot — adequate for multiple simultaneous video calls, 4K streaming, and cloud work. The 300 Mbps plans make sense for households with 3+ heavy users or frequent large file transfers. 1 Gbps plans are overkill for most households but make sense for video producers, heavy gamers, or tech professionals.

What matters more than raw speed in Phuket is upload speed and consistency. AIS Fibre's reputation for consistent performance — not just peak speeds — is why many remote workers prefer it. For reference speeds by coworking space, read our best coworking spaces in Phuket guide.

Internet for Your Home Office in Phuket

If your income depends on reliable internet, consider a dual-connection setup: primary fibre (AIS or True) plus a 4G router with a separate SIM as automatic failover. The total cost adds ฿300–500/month but provides business-grade reliability. A good-quality router with dual-WAN support handles the failover automatically — you won't even notice a cut.
