Dental care in Phuket is genuinely one of the best value propositions for expats from Western countries. A checkup and clean that costs £80–150 back home runs ฿500–900 here. Implants that would cost £2,500–4,000 in the UK cost ฿25,000–40,000 in Phuket — and the quality at the main clinics is excellent. Many expats fly family members out to Phuket specifically for dental work and the numbers still make sense after airfares.

This guide covers where to go, what to pay, and what to expect from dental care in Phuket in 2026.

Insider tip

When I need implant work or anything complex, I go to Bangkok Hospital Dental Centre on Yaowarat Road. For routine checkups, Lotus Dental in Rawai is more convenient and cheaper. Don't default to Bangkok Hospital for everything — the independent clinics are often excellent and faster to get appointments. The key test: does your dentist explain what they're doing and give you a written cost estimate before starting? Any good clinic here will do that without you having to ask.

Insurance Coverage for Dental in Phuket

Standard international health insurance policies (Cigna, Pacific Cross, AXA, Allianz) sold to expats in Phuket do not include dental as a standard benefit. Dental must be added as a rider to your policy at additional cost.

A typical dental rider adds ฿5,000–15,000 per year to your premium and covers: routine checkups (usually 2 per year), fillings, extractions, and basic root canals. It typically excludes: cosmetic procedures (whitening, veneers), orthodontics (braces/Invisalign), and pre-existing conditions for the first 12–24 months.

The maths calculation most expats run: a checkup + clean twice a year costs ฿1,000–1,800. A filling once a year is ฿1,500. Total realistic annual dental spend: ฿3,000–5,000. For most expats, paying out of pocket is more economical than paying ฿8,000–15,000 for a dental rider. Unless you're expecting significant work (crowns, root canals), self-funding dental makes financial sense in Phuket.

Common Questions

Is dental care cheaper in Phuket than in the UK or Australia?
Yes, significantly. A routine checkup + scale and polish in Phuket runs ฿500–900 (£11–20 / A$20–35) vs £80–120 in the UK or A$200–300 in Australia. Fillings are 60–70% cheaper. Implants are 40–50% cheaper. The quality at reputable clinics is excellent.
Which is the best dental clinic in Phuket for expats?
Bangkok Hospital Phuket's Dental Centre on Yaowarat Road is consistently rated highest for complex work — implants, crowns, orthodontics. Smile Plus in Phuket Town and iDental in Patong are popular with expats for routine care. For Rawai/Nai Harn residents, Lotus Dental on Sai Yuan Road is convenient and well-regarded.
Is Phuket or Bangkok better for dental work?
For complex work requiring multiple visits, Bangkok's facilities at Bumrungrad or Bangkok Dental Hospital are marginally more advanced. For routine care and single-implant work, Phuket's quality clinics match Bangkok. Most Phuket expats don't go to Bangkok for standard dental work.
Does health insurance cover dental in Phuket?
Standard expat health insurance (Cigna, Pacific Cross, AXA) typically does NOT cover routine dental by default. You need to add a dental rider (฿5,000–15,000/year extra premium). Most expats self-fund dental given the low costs here.
How much do dental implants cost in Phuket?
A single dental implant (including crown) at a reputable Phuket clinic costs ฿25,000–45,000 (£560–1,000 / A$1,050–1,850). The same implant in the UK costs £2,000–3,500 and in Australia A$3,000–6,000. Getting implants in Phuket makes clear financial sense for UK/Australian expats.
