Getting Your Hair Done in Phuket: What Expats Actually Experience
When I first moved to Phuket, I made the mistake most newcomers make: wandering into the nearest inexpensive Thai salon and hoping for the best. The result was technically a haircut. It just wasn't quite the haircut I'd asked for. After six years of trial and error — and conversations with dozens of expats across Rawai, Bang Tao, Kamala, and Phuket Town — I have a much clearer picture of where to go.
The good news: Phuket has genuinely excellent hair and beauty services at every price point. The key is knowing where they are, what to expect at each tier, and how to communicate clearly with your stylist. This guide covers all of it.
The Three Tiers of Phuket Beauty Services
Tier 1: Local Thai Salons (฿80–฿350)
Every neighbourhood in Phuket has several of these — shopfront operations, often family-run, with Thai-language signs and a few chairs. They are outstanding value for simple cuts (especially for men), Thai-style blow-dries, and basic treatments. Many are very skilled with straight Asian hair textures. Communication can be a challenge for complex styles — bring photos and use Google Translate if needed.
For men: a basic Thai barbershop trim, shave, and head massage typically costs ฿100–฿200 and is one of the genuine lifestyle benefits of living in Phuket. You'll find these barbershops throughout Rawai, Chalong, Phuket Town's Old Town area, and along the main roads in Thalang.
Tier 2: Expat-Oriented Salons (฿350–฿1,500 for a cut)
These are the sweet spot for most foreign residents. They have English-speaking stylists, experience with Western and other non-Asian hair textures, and professional product lines (Wella, L'Oreal Professionnel, Kerastase). Prices are higher than local salons but far below what you'd pay in Europe or Australia for comparable quality.
Tier 3: Premium and International Salons (฿1,500–฿5,000+)
Phuket has a growing number of premium salons, particularly in the Bang Tao/Laguna area and Phuket Town, staffed by stylists trained abroad or with major hotel experience. These offer the full range of services — balayage, keratin treatments, hair extensions, advanced colour techniques — at prices that are still roughly 30–50% below equivalent services in Western cities.
Key Tip for Hair Colour: Always book a consultation before a colour appointment at any new salon. Even salons with good general reputations may not have stylists experienced with your specific hair type or desired technique. A 15-minute consultation avoids potential disappointment.
Beauty Services by Area
Bang Tao / Laguna / Cherng Talay
The highest concentration of premium international salons. Heavily influenced by the large European expat population in this area. Easy to find English-speaking stylists experienced with Western hair. Higher prices than south Phuket.
Rawai / Nai Harn
Good mix of mid-range expat salons and local Thai shops. This area has a large long-term expat community so stylists have adapted. More affordable than Bang Tao but slightly less premium choice.
Phuket Town
Best variety at every price level. The Old Town area has excellent local salons at low prices. The commercial districts around Central Festival and around Bangkok Hospital have more international options. Good for those who want choice.
Kamala / Surin
Smaller selection but some excellent boutique salons serving the high-end villa residents in this area. Worth checking locally — this pocket of Phuket has a surprisingly refined service offering.
Patong
Huge volume of tourist-oriented salons on Bangla Road and the beach strip. Quality is inconsistent and often geared to quick tourist visits. For long-term residents, better to look elsewhere unless you find a specific stylist you trust here.
Kata / Karon
Mid-range options serving the significant expat retiree population. Some very good salons here at reasonable prices. Worth exploring if you live in the south.

Finding Reliable Recommendations
The most reliable way to find a good salon in Phuket is still through word-of-mouth from expats in your area. The Facebook groups "Phuket Expats & Newbies," "Rawai Expats & Locals," and "Bang Tao / Laguna Area — Expats & Residents" all have regular threads with current recommendations. Search the group before posting — specific questions like "balayage specialist in Rawai?" get detailed, recent answers.
Google Maps reviews are helpful for basic quality filtering, but local expat groups give you the nuance that review scores miss — like whether the stylist has experience with curly hair, or whether the salon's "English" is conversational enough for a complex colour consultation.
For Afro-Textured and Curly Hair
This is a genuine challenge in Phuket. Stylists experienced with natural Afro-textured hair are fewer than in major Western cities, but they do exist — particularly in Bang Tao and among stylists who have trained internationally. The expat Facebook groups are your best source for specific recommendations, as this community actively shares its finds and this information changes as stylists move between salons.
Nail Salons in Phuket
Nail salons are one of Phuket's truly excellent value offerings. You'll find them in virtually every shopping mall and on most main roads. The Villa Market in Rawai, Tesco Lotus (now Lotus's) branches around the island, and Central Festival in Phuket Town all have nail salons with consistent quality. Gel nail sets that would cost ฿3,000+ in London or Sydney can be done beautifully in Phuket for ฿600–฿1,200.
Spa vs Beauty Salon: The Distinction in Phuket
Phuket has a large spa industry (traditional Thai massage, aromatherapy, body treatments) that is separate from the hair and beauty sector. Spas are covered in our Phuket spa and massage guide. Beauty salons focus on hair, nails, and beauty treatments like waxing, facials, and makeup. Some premium wellness centres in Bang Tao bridge both categories.
For facial treatments, laser skin services, and dermatological aesthetics — Phuket has a growing medical aesthetics sector, particularly around Bangkok Hospital Phuket and in private clinics in Phuket Town and Cherng Talay. These are generally significantly cheaper than equivalent treatments in Western countries.
