Finding a proper loaf of sourdough was one of my first missions when I moved to Phuket. It took a few months and several disappointing supermarket attempts before I found what I was looking for — and now, six years on, Phuket's bakery and breakfast scene is unrecognisable compared to what it was. The island has developed a genuine café culture, proper artisan bakers, and breakfast spots that would hold their own in London or Melbourne.

Here's my honest guide to where to find good bread, pastries, and breakfast in Phuket in 2026.

Artisan Bakeries in Phuket: Where to Find Real Bread

Phuket now has a small but genuine artisan bakery scene — proper sourdough, whole grain loaves, focaccia, French baguettes, and quality pastries baked fresh daily. Most of these are small operations run by European expats or passionate Thais who trained abroad.

Bang Tao and Cherng Talay

The strongest bakery concentration is in and around Bang Tao and Cherng Talay, which makes sense given the large international community here. You'll find European-style bakeries tucked into the side roads off the main Srisoonthorn Road corridor — some operating from small shophouses, others from dedicated café spaces.

Sourdough loaves sell for ฿180–฿350; croissants and pain au chocolat for ฿80–฿150 each. The best spots sell out early on weekends — arrive by 9am for the best selection. Many Phuket bakeries also take pre-orders via Line or Facebook, which is the smarter approach if you want a specific item.

Phuket Town: The French Connection

Phuket Town has an interesting bakery history — the French colonial influence on southern Thailand left a legacy of good bread culture, and the old town area still has some excellent bakeries. French-style boulangeries in the shophouse lanes around Thalang Road serve proper baguettes (฿60–฿90), croissants, and quiche. Pair with a strong café au lait and you have a genuinely good morning.

Thai-style bakeries are also excellent value here — khanom pang ji (coconut-stuffed bread rolls), pandan rolls, and sweet buns are sold from carts and small shops throughout the day for ฿15–฿30 each. Different from European baking but absolutely worth trying on their own merits.

Insider Tip Pre-order sourdough from Bang Tao bakeries via Line app by Saturday evening for Sunday collection — most sell out quickly at weekend markets. Follow them on Facebook for updates and seasonal specials.

Breakfast Cafés: The Expat Favourites

Phuket's café scene is well-developed. Whether you want avocado toast, eggs benedict, a proper full English, or a Thai-style rice porridge with century egg, you'll find it. The best breakfast cafés have a warm, unhurried atmosphere that matches island life perfectly — the kind of place you go for an hour and stay for three.

Bang Tao: The High End

Bang Tao has the widest variety of café breakfasts in Phuket. The stretch from Laguna through to the beach area has smoothie bowl cafés, açaí specialists, Instagram-friendly brunch spots, and classic café-with-good-coffee establishments. Prices are higher than elsewhere — a full brunch with coffee runs ฿300–฿500 — but quality is consistently good.

Rawai: Value and Character

Rawai offers excellent breakfast value. The area around Nai Harn Lake and the back streets of Rawai has a cluster of small, character-filled cafés that serve excellent breakfast at honest prices — ฿150–฿250 for a full breakfast with coffee. These are the kinds of places where the owner remembers your order after the second visit. Worth driving for.

Kamala: The Middle Ground

Kamala's village has a good selection of cafés that sit between Bang Tao's premium pricing and Rawai's local-price feel. Good sourdough toast, reasonable eggs, reliable espresso. A solid choice if you're based in the Kamala area. ฿180–฿380 for a sit-down breakfast.

Thai Breakfast: What You're Missing

Even if you're a committed Western breakfast person, Thai breakfast deserves more than you probably give it. Getting up early (6–8am) and heading to a local market for a Thai breakfast is one of the simple pleasures of living in Phuket.

Jok (จอก) is a smooth rice porridge topped with minced pork, ginger, spring onion, and a soft-boiled egg — deeply comforting and excellent for hot or humid mornings when you want something gentle. Khanom krok (ขนมครก) are small coconut rice pancakes cooked in a dimpled iron pan — sweet, slightly custardy, and addictive. The vendor with the longest queue is always the right vendor.

Phuket-style dim sum (available in Phuket Town's Chinese neighbourhood) is also a brilliant breakfast option — small plates of har gow, siu mai, and cheung fun with jasmine tea, for around ฿60–฿150 per person. Much more affordable than the weekend brunch cafés, and often more interesting.
