The HKT Airport Basics

If you live in Phuket, HKT airport becomes almost a second home. After hundreds of trips through it, here are the things that actually matter—not the obvious stuff, but the patterns you learn after the tenth flight.

Airport Layout & Quick Orientation

HKT = Phuket International Airport (IATA: HKT). It's a single integrated terminal with domestic and international wings, connected inside—not like some airports where they're separate buildings.

It's straightforward, well-signposted in English, and honestly one of the cleanest airports in SE Asia. No surprises here.

Arrival Tips & Immigration

This is where expat knowledge actually saves you time and frustration.

Immigration Queues: Timing is Everything

Worst immigration queues: 09:00-12:00. Why? Flight banks from BKK, Singapore, and KL all hit Phuket simultaneously. You'll join a queue of 500+ people.

If you can choose your flights: evening arrivals (18:00-22:00) have much shorter queues. I'm serious—this alone saves 20-30 minutes per arrival.

Thailand Elite Card

If you have a Thailand Elite card and plan to be in Phuket long-term, use the Elite lane at immigration. You skip the main queue entirely. Not relevant for short-term expats, but if you're staying 5+ years, it's worth factoring in.

TM6 & TM30: What Actually Changed

TM6 departure card was abolished for most nationalities in 2023. Don't worry about it on arrival—you won't get one. However, your landlord should still file TM30 when you return (if you're renting). It's your landlord's responsibility, not yours, though you should check that it's actually filed.

Baggage Claim

Three belts: 1, 2, 3. Signs in English are clear. Trolleys are free. Nothing fancy, but it's efficient. If you're arriving with significant luggage, the queues are shortest about 20 mins after the doors open (so about 25 mins into baggage claim).

Getting from Arrivals to Transport

Grab from airport: Official Grab pickup point outside arrivals has clear signage. Better than metered taxi—same price, less hassle, less uncertainty. To major areas:

Area Approx Cost Drive Time
Bang Tao / Laguna ฿500-700 25 min
Chalong ฿400-550 30 min
Kata / Karon ฿450-600 35 min
Rawai / Nai Harn ฿600-800 50 min
Phuket Town ฿300-400 30 min

Official taxi: Metered + ฿50 airport surcharge. Queues can be long during peak season (Nov-Feb), but it's a reliable option if Grab is full.

SIM Cards on Arrival

AIS, Dtac, and True have booths at arrivals. 30-day tourist SIM: ฿299-499 with data. If you already have a Thai number, skip these—just activate when you get home. If you're on a brand new trip and need connectivity immediately, grab one here.

Departure Tips & Security

Departures is where most expats make mistakes.

Check-In Timing

Thai Airways / Bangkok Airways: Open 3 hours before departure. Get there if you have checked luggage.

AirAsia / Budget carriers: Open 2 hours before. But don't cut it to 1 hour—during peak season (Nov-Feb), security queues can hit 30 minutes.

My rule: arrive 2.5 hours before any international flight, 2 hours for regional. You'll never regret arriving early; you'll definitely regret arriving late.

Security

Standard rules: laptop out, liquids in clear bag (100ml max per container). This is strictly enforced here. No surprises. Queues during peak hours (07:00-09:00, 17:00-19:00) can be 15-30 mins. Nothing you can do about it except arrive early.

Departure Tax

Included in your ticket price since 2007. Nothing to pay separately. Seriously, stop worrying about this.

Airport Lounges & Amenities

Decent lounge access in Phuket is limited but useful if you're on a long layover or an early morning flight.

Plaza Premium Lounge

Accessible with Priority Pass, Amex Platinum card, or select credit cards. Located airside after security. Good for a shower (important on a red-eye), a meal, and a quiet work space. Worth it if you have access.

Thai Airways Royal Orchid Lounge

For Thai Airways J/F passengers and Star Alliance Gold members. Standard lounge—alcohol, food, showers. Nothing fancy but solid.

Bangkok Airways Boutique Lounge

Blue Ribbon Club members and business class passengers. Small and understated.

Airside Food & Drink

Coffee World, Au Bon Pain, some Thai restaurants. Prices are standard airport markup (฿100-250 for a meal). Eat before security if you want better value—street food on the landside is cheaper and better quality.

Duty Free

Arrivals duty free is better than departures (buy on the way in, not out). Standard stuff: alcohol, cigarettes, cosmetics. Not cheap, but tax-free.

Getting to HKT from Key Areas

The most practical info for expats living in Phuket.

From Bang Tao / Laguna:

~25 min, ฿500-700 Grab. Busiest area for expats, so Grab is reliable.

From Chalong:

~45 min, ฿500-600 Grab. Central location, reasonable drive.

From Phuket Town:

~35 min, ฿300-400 Grab. Closest major hub. Smart Bus option too (฿30-80, but slow—up to 90 mins with multiple stops).

From Rawai / Nai Harn:

~50-60 min, ฿600-800 Grab. Longest drive but doable.

From Kata / Karon:

~35 min, ฿450-600 Grab. Straightforward drive.

Important: Add 30 mins extra during rush hour (07:00-09:00 outbound, 17:00-19:00 inbound on weekdays). Thai drivers are not rushing people to the airport during peak traffic.

Expat-Specific Hacks & Strategies

Frequent Flyer Strategy

If you're flying multiple times a month, stay in a hotel adjacent to the airport for early morning flights. XING HOTEL is literally next to HKT, about 2-3 mins walk. Novotel HKT is 5 mins drive. AccorHotels has several options. Cost: ฿1,500-3,000/night. Sounds expensive until you realize you've saved 90 mins of airport commute and hotel checkout stress.

Left Luggage

If you need to store bags during a layover or between trips, left luggage is available both airside and landside near arrivals. Cost: ฿200-400/day. Useful more than you'd think.

Currency Exchange

Booths at arrivals are okay, not the worst. But honestly: Wise card at the ATM is still better. Get cash there before you travel, avoid airport ATMs if you can.

Holiday Travel Hacks

High season peaks: Nov 1-Dec 31, Chinese New Year (late Jan-early Feb). Book early morning or evening flights—fewer tourists on flights at those times, shorter queues.

Thai Visa on Arrival (if needed)

Don't do it at Phuket airport unless you absolutely have to. The queues are brutal. Get your visa in advance in Bangkok or your home country. It's not faster at the airport.
