One of the genuine lifestyle upgrades that comes with Phuket living — especially once you're settled and know what you're doing — is the accessibility of domestic help at reasonable cost. A full-time housekeeper, a gardener for a villa, or a driver for the school run are financially realistic in a way they simply aren't in Europe or North America.
But hiring domestic staff in Thailand comes with some nuances most expats don't think about until they're in the middle of a problem: what wages are fair, what legal obligations you have, how to structure the relationship to work well, and what to do when it isn't working. This guide covers all of that honestly.
Wages for Domestic Staff in Phuket (2026)
Rates in Phuket are higher than most of Thailand due to the high cost of living and the presence of a large, relatively well-paying expat community. The rates below reflect 2026 market rates — they've risen noticeably since 2022 due to inflation and labour competition from Phuket's construction and tourism sectors.
| Role | Part-Time/Daily | Full-Time Monthly | Notes |

| Housekeeper/cleaner | ฿500–฿700/half day | ฿12,000–฿18,000 | 5–6 days/week, 8hr days |
| Live-in housekeeper | — | ฿9,000–฿14,000 | Plus room and board provided |
| Gardener (villa) | ฿500–฿700/day | ฿12,000–฿16,000 | If full-time; most are 2–3 days/week |
| Part-time gardener | ฿500–฿600/visit | ฿4,000–฿8,000 | 2–3 visits per week |
| Driver (full-time) | — | ฿18,000–฿28,000 | Does not include fuel or vehicle maintenance |
| Driver (school run) | ฿300–฿500/trip | ฿7,000–฿12,000 | Morning + afternoon typically |
| Nanny/childcarer | ฿600–฿900/half day | ฿15,000–฿22,000 | Higher for experienced English-speaking |
| Cook (part-time) | ฿500–฿800/session | ฿12,000–฿18,000 | Full-time cooking included with some housekeepers |
💡 The "fair wage" conversation
Some expats try to hire below-market rates and justify it as "still good by Thai standards." The reality: Phuket's cost of living is high for Thai residents too. Below-market wages create resentment, high turnover, and ultimately cost you more in repeated recruitment and training. Paying at or slightly above market rate attracts better candidates and creates genuine loyalty. It's worth it.
Where to Find Domestic Staff in Phuket
Expat referral (best method)
By far the most reliable way. Post in the main Phuket Expats Facebook group asking for a housekeeper/gardener/driver recommendation. You'll typically get 10–20 responses within 24 hours from expats vouching for specific people. A staff member who comes with a personal recommendation from a trusted source — particularly one who has worked for multiple expat households — is significantly lower risk than hiring cold.
Domestic staffing agencies in Phuket
Several agencies in Phuket pre-screen domestic staff, take up references, and handle placement. Placement fees typically run ฿3,000–฿8,000. Agencies are particularly useful if you need a driver with a clean licence history or a nanny with documented experience. Ask for references from past placements — a good agency will provide them readily.
Online platforms
Thai-specific platforms and the expat Facebook marketplace both carry domestic staff listings. Quality varies more than with referrals. Always do a 2–4 week paid trial period regardless of source before committing to a regular arrangement.
Legal Obligations: What You Actually Need to Know
Thai Social Security Act
Under Thailand's Social Security Act, employers are required to register regular employees — including household workers — with the Social Security Office (SSO). In practice, many informal domestic arrangements in Phuket operate outside this system, but there are real risks:
- If a staff member is injured at work and not registered, you can face personal liability under the Workmen's Compensation Act
- An unregistered worker who makes a labour complaint has less formal recourse but can still pursue issues through the Labour Protection Office
- For long-term arrangements, registration is the legally correct position
Social Security contributions run at 5% of salary from the employer and 5% from the employee (up to the Social Security-capped salary). For a ฿15,000/month housekeeper, this is ฿750/month from you. The SSO office for Phuket is on Phuket Road in Phuket Town.
Workmen's Compensation
Separate from Social Security, Workmen's Compensation (กองทุนเงินทดแทน) covers work-related injuries. For domestic workers, registration is through the Social Security Fund and it covers workplace injuries. If your housekeeper falls from a ladder cleaning your windows and isn't registered, you're in a difficult legal position.
Written Employment Contract
Not strictly required by Thai law for informal domestic arrangements, but strongly advisable for any arrangement lasting more than a month. A simple contract covering: duties, hours, pay, notice period, annual leave, and any house rules. Having it translated into Thai by a certified translator (฿500–฿1,500 at translation offices in Phuket Town) makes it legally more robust.
⚠️ The undocumented worker problem
Some domestic workers in Phuket are undocumented migrant workers (typically from Myanmar or Cambodia). Hiring an undocumented worker exposes you to fines under the Working of Aliens Act. This is not a minor technical issue — immigration enforcement in Thailand does occasionally conduct checks. For live-in arrangements especially, ensure any worker you employ has a valid work permit or is a Thai national with ID. Ask to see their Thai ID card (บัตรประชาชน) or work permit.
Managing Domestic Staff in Phuket: Cultural Notes
Face and communication
Thai employees are unlikely to tell you directly if something is wrong — if they're unhappy, confused about instructions, or have a personal problem affecting work, they'll typically show it through behaviour rather than words. Creating a safe space for open communication (through calm, private conversations, never public criticism) is important for a good long-term working relationship.
Clear instructions matter more than you think
What seems obvious to you may not be obvious to someone from a very different domestic background. Show, don't just tell. The first week of any new arrangement should involve demonstrated instructions for each specific task you care about — not assuming your standard is shared.
Public holidays and Songkran
Thailand has 17 public holidays. Songkran (Thai New Year, April 13–15) is particularly significant — many Thai workers travel home to family, and requests to work through Songkran should be approached with sensitivity and appropriate bonus pay. Establishing a holiday and leave policy at the start of the relationship avoids later misunderstandings.
Annual bonus: the 13th month
A 13th month salary bonus at Thai New Year (Songkran) or Western New Year is standard practice among expat employers and is expected after the first year. Budget for it — failure to pay it when an expectation has been set will significantly damage the relationship and motivate staff to look elsewhere.
Driver-Specific Considerations
Hiring a full-time driver in Phuket is more complex than hiring a housekeeper because of vehicle and licence considerations:
- Check their Thai driving licence is valid, clean, and appropriate for the vehicle type
- Your vehicle insurance must name or cover employed drivers — check with your insurer before they drive your car
- A driver who drives your vehicle regularly should be named on the insurance policy
- Clear fuel policy: who pays for fuel on what trips, receipts required
- Verify driving experience in Phuket specifically — experience in the north of Thailand doesn't prepare someone for Patong intersection behaviour
Termination and Notice
Under Thai labour law, employees who have worked for more than 120 days are entitled to severance pay if dismissed without cause. This scales with length of service, from 30 days' wages (under 1 year) up to 400 days (10+ years). For informal domestic arrangements this is less clearly enforced, but it's worth knowing. Notice periods of 30 days are standard. Dismissal with cause (theft, serious misconduct) can be immediate but should be documented.
